Note: This article includes generalisation in terms of its audience/addressee implying that it includes me aswell. Please do not take anything personally. Moreover, it does not include any hint of my personal political or religious views.
We, the proud, well educated youth, have one and only one source of our knowledge: Facebook.
Take a moment and deny it. Shake that head of yours (as it is the summer vacations, then most probably, shake a head full of oil filled dirty hair, but no offence).
Done, are we?
Good!!
Moving onto the newsfeed-cum-newspaper scenario, what is usually the reaction of people when they hear a terrible news over the internet? Does the news really affect our lives, beyond a status update? When we break our fasts, how many of us really pray for freedom of Gaza?
But that is not the point. Here is what most people do to their newsfeed. :D
INTERNATIONAL/NATIONAL NEWS
-Gaza under attack
OMG, horrible, jewish people. People please like my status to save this most-probably-already-dead kid's life #IamSUCHagoodMuslimforputtingupthisstatus
-Imran Khan's Azadi March
Dude, if this is Imran Khan, he must be right in whatever-the-heck is the point of this march. And yay, another concert! Let me go buy a ticket to Isloo. #MilliNaghmayPeNacho
-Al Algerie Lost To The Radar
ALIENS!! After Malaysian flight, now this. Aliens are jewish too I think, targeting Muslims like this. #ExtraterrstrialTerrorism
-Al Algerie Wreckage Kills 116
Meh, my alien theory was much fun.#WhoCares
ENTERTAINMENT/SPORTS NEWS
-Fawad Khan to be in an Indian Movie against Sonam Kapoor
You know, I always liked this guy. Ever since his debut in Hamsafar (his debut serial was Satrangi by the way), I have been his Biggest fan. And Sonam is so pretty #Khoosurat
-Amir Liaquat Molested the Poor Mango
How can i eat this mango now? I feel so eww. (while eating paiti of mangoes that is)
#SpoiledMySummers
-Messi to be the next Maradona
I have no idea who Maradona is but WTH! MESSI IS THE BEST!! #MessiFTW
-Mario Goetze scores the winning Goal in World Cup 2014, Germany wins
Hail Hitler!! MY TEAM WON. But yes, Messi still has my heart and soul.
I think this much is enough. Anymore and I shall be receiving hate mails, which might be good for my inbox though considering those might be the only mails that I get. EVER.
Putting behind my horrible attempt at criticism-cum-humour, what we need in this moment is a little more compassion, originality and perhaps, confidence.
Compassion to really feel the pain of our fellow humans. Instead of praying for a flatter tummy or larger allowance, spare a moment for someone's life. You can make a difference. Because you have a God greater than all greatnesses.
Originality to be able to make up your own mind. Sadly, these days most of us either showcase a mindset bred to us by family, friends or worse, media. Do your own research. Find any interesting topic and look it up. Listen to news or read it. Find a blog/e-paper with perhaps good illustrations to make it interesting and spend ten minutes on it. and, most importantly, MAKE UP YOUR OWN MIND.
Confidence to be who you are. I mean it in every sense possible. Be original in your beliefs, your talents, your obsessions. Be confident and be brave. Because everyone else is as afraid of judgements and opinions as you are. And because you do not have to be what they are making you.
